PRESS RELEASE 21st October 1998
AET TAKING RESERVATIONS
As part of a £4m project, Bletchingley-based AET (Advanced Ergonomic Technologies Ltd.)
have supplied the Hiross flexible space underfloor air-conditioning system to the British
Midland reservation centre at East Midlands airport in Castle Donnington near Nottingham.
The air-conditioning has been installed over 2,500sq.m in 16 zones.
The system uses the underfloor void as a supply and return air plenum, the air being drawn up into the occupied space via floor-recessed Fantiles with individual remote control for maximum user satisfaction. The British Midland building is on two floors and will be occupied by reservation and marketing staff. The external structure makes much use of traditional materials. It features an envelope steel frame with brick cladding, aluminium window frames and an Eternit pitched artificial slate roof. The roof area also houses plant rooms. Jason Challender of the British Midland Property Department comments: "By using the floor void to accommodate extensive IT cabling and also as a plenum for the Hiross air conditioning, we have reduced the building's floor-to-floor dimensions considerably. The AET solution has produced considerable savings in materials and was a valuable asset at planning stage. A key issue was acoustic retention since a major telephone reservation centre generates a great deal of noise. We have therefore opted for metal ceiling tiles with foam insulated backing".
Mr Challender continues: "The building has been designed on an open plan basis so that it can accommodate extra staff if required. The flexibility of the Hiross air conditioning system will be a major benefit should usage of the building change" The reservation centre was completed in late July and is now fully operational. The architects are Manchester-based Hattrell and Partners. Use of the building's floor voids for both IT cabling and the Hiross air-conditioning significantly reduced floor-to-ceiling heights and allowed the architects much flexibility with aspect ratios. The building is an investment developed by Bilton plc. Bilton has used AET's air conditioning solutions before. A recent project was for Falcon House in Hounslow where the demonstrable success of the Hiross installation impressed British Midland during site visits. |
