Going up in smoke with AET

Going up in smokeSmoking in the workplace is a perennial issue and it is becoming increasingly apparent that banning it outright is rarely an ideal solution.A poorly conceived smoking policy can also have a negative effect. The emotive nature of the smoking debate often means that common sense and consideration are pushed to the bottom of the list when employers consider what type of smoking policy to introduce. Glan Blake Thomas of Bletchingley-based AET outlines his own company’s work in the field of air-conditioning as it relates to smoking at work. |

A Policy is certainly neededMore and more employers are currently seeking a smoking policy which is fair to both smokers and non-smokers but which also recognises the broad requirements of businesses and the need to minimise any disruption to working practices, avoid conflict between employees, between employees and management, and keep staff morale high and loyalty intact. It is now recognised that a complete smoking ban within a workplace can lead to increased stress which results in reduced efficiency not to mention absenteeism due to pneumonia.Leading-edge air-conditioning systems complemented by appropriate air filtration equipment can go a long way to creating a happy medium. The issue of air quality with regard to human safety is far larger than just ‘smell’ cigarette smoke. Many other pollutants in the office environment are considered dangerous to health and air-conditioning. Ventilation systems must achieve dilution of these pollutants as well as cooling or heating the space.
Finding the missing staffAnother familiar problem is the inability to locate staff who have left the premises in order to smoke. Glan Blake Thomas often confronts such workers to ask why they are standing here. Usually the answer is because it is a no smoking office. Is it also a no formaldehyde office, or no ozone office, he asks?As sole distributor in the UK for the Hiross FlexibleSpace underfloor air-conditioning system, AET (are able to provide individual zones of air control and a completely variable volume system. The company’s success is coming in the wake not only of more tolerant attitudes to smoking in the workplace but increased awareness of Sick Building Syndrome and the pollutants like formaldehyde that arise from synthetic furnishings, and ozone from electrical equipment found in modern offices. AET recognizes that each office building is as different as the people who work in it and it is the flexibility of the Hiross system of underfloor air-conditioning which is attracting considerable interest. AET solutions can make smoking areas into working areas not relaxation rooms. Ventilation can be rationalised with appropriate, easily maintained walls, floors and ceilings.
Smoke Removal may be just the answerThe FlexibleSpace system is particularly effective in designated smoking areas since the Hiross CAM units ensure that air removed from smoking areas is carefully controlled and travels back through the floor to the dedicated CAM units where carbon filtration or electrostatic filtration can be applied. There is no possibility of this air carrying over to other parts of the building. The air extracted from smoking areas can be separately ducted and removed while heat recovery is still achieved so ensuring efficient energy usage.Glan Blake Thomas comments: "At AET we advocate that in smoking areas the Hiross system should be used to introduce higher than normal levels of fresh air in order to achieve greater dilution of cigarette smoke. Because the fresh and cooling air is introduced from a low level, high ventilation efficiency and good dilution of all pollutants can be easily achieved. While we see one of our roles as helping facilities managers to introduce an effective smoking policy, the issues are wider and our concerns include ‘Sick Building Syndrome’ and off-gassing.
Partitions may also helpAET are also the UK’s sole distributor of the Movinord system of demountable partitioning. This is among Europe’s few truly demountable partitioning ranges and AET have been appointed sole distributor in the UK and Ireland by Movinord s.a. for their demountable partitioning products. With considered use of separate extractor fans, the two systems complement each other in many ways and can be particularly effective in creating areas in which smokers can indulge their habit while not inconveniencing other members of staffThe ability to keep smokers integrated with the rest of the workforce without causing discomfort for either group is a facet of AET’s ability to integrate air-conditioning, partitioning and other office equipment into truly flexible solutions. While there has been little research on the loss of productivity resulting from staff leaving the building to smoke, it is likely that the figures are significant.
Not just a worker's problemTemporary absenteeism in order to smoke is as prevalent in board rooms and directors’ suites as it is in main work areas or shop-floors. It is also noticeable that staff canteen smells also drift into work areas irritating staff. Innovative designing in these areas employing leading-edge air-conditioning and demountable partitioning can contribute significantly to the comfort of employees. As a modular underfloor system, the Hiross FlexibleSpace system uses individually controlled floor terminal units allowing occupants personalized control of their workspace, a vital consideration in creating a healthy building. Extensive independent testing has shown that the Hiross system produces excellent air quality environments which meet or exceed ASHRAE and other norms for air quality and indoor working conditions.
Or a personal EWSAnother development from AET is the EWS or Environmental Work Station where individual workers can set controls on a desk-mounted unit in much the same way as they can set controls in their cars. They can choose the degree of heating and cooling and direction of locally filtered air to suit their own requirements.AET does not support or condone the production of any type of pollution in the environment. AET works to reduce the effects of such pollution where it exists by tried and tested ventilation techniques and has had much success in this field. |
